Senior Exhibition "Settling Into My Hips" - 2005
My autobiography is in color, not words. Paint is my medium of self-articulation. The skin is my blank page, the portraits are my chapters, the discovery of each curve of movement, each wrinkle of character, my muse. The purpose of my recent work has become intimate because the subject matter includes myself. Most of my work, even portraits of other women, are self-portraits; as in each woman I paint, I become more familiar with myself, my own stories. In turn, I relate to these women. By boldly appopriating the substance of my life into paintings, the assurance of common experience with others nurtures confidence. I intend to observe, as a visual, living epitaph, women in their humanity, and allow my paintings to become the autobiography of the universal truths we share, across time, across race, and across religion.
